Unit Project: Create a Lightbox

Lightbox
Lightbox
The final project for this unit is to construct a simple lightbox. You can do it in one of two ways:
  • an indicator panel with the light on the outside
  • or a studio lightbox with the bulb on the inside to illuminate small objects for photography

Requirements

  • Basic Design Requirements
    1. Design and build a cardboard or foamcore box with a single LED light on the inside or the outside.
    2. There should be a normal power switch that turns the LED on or off.
    3. There should be a second emergency power-off switch that also turns off the circuit when flipped. This switch must be located on a different side of the box from the normal power switch (for instance, on the back instead of on top).
  • New Build Requirements
    1. Do not reuse any wires or connectors from previous steps. Make new ones for this project.
  • Workmanship
    1. Do not reuse any wires or connectors from previous steps. Make new ones for this project.
    2. Only the LED (no other components) should be visible from the side it's on:
      • Inside the photo studio
      • The front face of the panel

Scoring Characteristics

  • Core Functions 30 points
Light must go on when the main power switch is in the ON position, and turn off when it is in the OFF position. If the emergency switch is set to OFF, the circuit should be off no matter what. No components except the LED bulb are visible from the side with the bulb. Main switch and emergency switch are on different faces of the box.
  • Shake Test 10 points
When shaken firmly, the light must not flicker, dim, or go out. No rattling of parts should be heard or felt.
  • Neatness 10 points
All wires should be of a proper length and use proper connectors -- no extra loops should be present, and connections should not be secured with tape where a connector is more appropriate (for instance, using electrical tape instead of a spade connector on a screw terminal.
  • Unique Improvements +5 points / additional design
+5 bonus points for each additional design feature that benefits the functionality or durability of the device. For instance, protecting the electronic components with an additional cardboard 'shield', or placing the coin cell battery in a more robust battery holder.
